Pioneering creative approaches to local and global challenges.
Inspired by the Okanagan landscape, our students and faculty are pioneering creative approaches to challenges that are both local and global in scope, from water conservation to micro technology, rural medicine, homelessness and Aboriginal learning.
The new Engineering, Management and Education Complex brings students and faculty together in an enriched learning environment, is fuelling innovation in product development, engineering processes and business incubation. Our new micro fabrication lab will develop small scale, energy-efficient technologies with commercial applications, particularly for the alternative energy and life sciences sectors. Additional investment is needed to equip the engineering and management laboratories.
Endowed Chairs and Professorships are pivotal in attracting strong faculty and students. These positions help establish clusters of expertise in areas from sustainability and conservation to health and wellness, population growth and species diversity. A key priority is the Chair in Water Resources and Ecosystem Management, which is critical to the future of the Okanagan basin, one of the driest watersheds and fastest-growing regions in Canada. The Chair will assess the impact of climate change and population growth on biodiversity and key industries, while developing innovative policy solutions to enhance water management in BC and beyond.
UBC’s Okanagan campus is committed to increasing research access for undergraduate students. A Centre of Excellence in Undergraduate Research will create more research awards, international travel opportunities, and house a Visiting Scholar program.
