If life is a journey, then Oxana Korj, DMD 2011, is certainly navigating a unique and exhilarating route. And her travels are far from over.
Originally from the Siberian city of Omsk, Oxana was drawn to adventure. She packed her bags, travelled far and wide, and eventually discovered UBC and the possibilities of advancing her education in a health-related profession.
“The welcome I received from the Faculty of Dentistry was amazing,” says Oxana. “Dentistry is hugely fulfilling but overwhelming. The support from faculty and fellow students during my four years at UBC is like nothing I’ve ever experienced in my life.”
During the DMD program, Oxana received the College of Dental Surgeons of BC Scholarship, the HSBC Emerging Leader Scholarship, and the Western Canada Dental Society Dr. Cal Waddell Memorial Scholarship—in addition to being a Wesbrook Scholar and receiving the President’s Entrance Scholarship as an undergraduate.
“A boost of energy” is how Oxana describes the awards—energy that she has channelled back into UBC through volunteer work on campus and in the community.
Graduation is one of many destinations on the map. For Oxana, the journey has really just begun.
