A collaborative research centre, the Institute for Healthy Living and Chronic Disease Prevention focuses on innovative research and supports the development of research partnerships by addressing how individuals, families and communities can benefit from improved healthy living strategies. The Institute integrates core staff with associate members who specialize in academics, health and policy- all of whom share an interest in preventing disease.
The Institute is deeply committed to providing research opportunities to students and encourages collaborative, interdisciplinary and community-based partnerships to develop new areas of research. Current areas of interest include: environmental/social determinants on healthy eating; tobacco reduction; active living; and methods of preventing chronic disease. As health issues are on the rise, the institute encourages new research projects. In order to further the Institute’s mission and goals, additional funding is necessary. New equipment to conduct research, funds to support collaborative research and funds to attract new researchers are all of vital importance. Students greatly benefit from donor, community and corporate support as opportunities grow for students to engage in hands-on, collaborative learning experiences. Continued support will strengthen UBC’s commitment to make the Okanagan campus an exceptional place of promise for our communities and students.
