The Robert Dickson and Glen Kong Memorial Fund

Throughout their careers, Drs. Dickson and Kong dedicated their careers to educating and training the next generation of otolaryngologists and both regularly supported awards for trainees. This memorial award will carry out their legacy by supporting future otolaryngologists with an interest in research to further the field.

About This Project

In honour of otolaryngologists Dr. Robert Dickson and Dr. Glen P. Kong, an award is being established in the UBC Division of Otolaryngology.

After serving two years in Korea with the United States Army, Dr. Kong attended and graduated Summa Cum laude with a B.A. from the University of Washington in 1954. He then completed medical school at UBC in 1958, before completing his otolaryngology residency at UBC in 1963. He was a Clinical Associate Professor in the UBC Division of Otolaryngology until his premature passing at age 50 in 1980. He was a mentor, colleague, and friend to many otolaryngologists, including Dr. Dickson.

Dr. Dickson began practising otolaryngology in Vancouver alongside Dr. Kong in 1970, after completing medical school at the University of Manitoba and his medical residence at the University of Minnesota. At the same time, he joined UBC as a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery. He loved his work and was a caring and accomplished otolaryngologist, especially dedicated to mentoring young otolaryngologists as he had been mentored by Dr. Kong. He was a member of the prestigious Triological Society of North America, among many other career achievements. Together with Dr. Donald Mintz—Clinical Associate Professor in the UBC Division of Otolaryngology, who took over Dr. Kong’s practice—Dr. Dickson established an annual award for otolaryngology residents in memory of Dr. Kong, which he and Dr. Mintz faithfully contributed to for more than twenty years.

When Dr. Dickson passed away in 2013, colleagues, family, and friends of both physicians decided to establish an endowed award to carry on their legacy of excellence in the field and their dedication to supporting residents.

The Drs. Robert Dickson and Glen P. Kong Memorial Award for Otolaryngology will be awarded annually to an otolaryngology resident who has made an outstanding contribution to the field through research and/or clinical care.
