Helping students take their passion for science beyond the classroom.
Students come to UBC to explore new concepts, to discover original ways of thinking, and to take their knowledge out into the world.
Research experiences in laboratories, field schools, corporations and agencies are vital in helping students make the leap from the classroom to a professional setting. A recent UBC Science alumni survey showed that 87 percent of respondents feel research experiences are important to undergraduate student learning.
Research experience brings learning to life, translates theory to the working world, builds confidence, and allows students to develop a supportive relationship with a mentor.
In celebration of the Faculty of Science’s 50th anniversary, UBC Science is working to increase the number of undergraduate students that have access to these valuable research opportunities. We have launched the Science Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) initiative.
SURE will raise funds to support students interested in conducting summer research. The Dean of Science has committed up to $100,000 in matching funds*, meaning your donation to SURE is instantly doubled.
There is far more demand for research experience than there are spaces. At the same time, many students have to take summer jobs to survive, and cannot commit to a summer program. SURE helps UBC labs create undergraduate research spaces and offers support to students to make sure that finances are not a barrier to participating in this valuable opportunity.
Students interested in applying for the SURE program should contact their faculty advisor for more information.
*All donations to this fund will be matched dollar to dollar up to $100,000.
