Bernie Guichon is a distinguished alumnus of the UBC Faculty of Land & Food Systems. On July 16, 2014, Bernie is celebrating his 90th birthday. He was the driving force in the creation of the Guichon Family Award at UBC, in honour of his late father Lawrence. This award supports students showing outstanding leadership qualities in the Faculty of Land and Food Systems. To mark his birthday, the Guichons invite you to make a donation to support the Family Award here.
Bernie Guichon is Lawrence Peter Guichon’s youngest son. Bernie grew up on the Guichon Ranch before serving in World War II with the Navy. Bernie enrolled at UBC in the Department of Agriculture, graduating in 1950. He tells many amazing stories of his experience at UBC, including the time he and a friend successfully chased an escaped steer across the campus on a motorbike.
After graduation Bernie worked for the Canadian Bechtel Company, where he was a key figure in negotiating right of way and easements for pipelines throughout Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia. In 1960, he went on to use his negotiating skills for West Coast Transmission Company, attaining right of ways for the natural gas pipeline to Vancouver. Bernie is highly respected by ranchers, First Nations, and land owners along the route of these pipelines because of his honesty and integrity.
The Guichon Family Award at UBC was created in memory of Bernie’s father, who was a pioneer rancher in the Nicola Valley. Lawrence received an honorary degree in Agriculture at UBC in recognition of his efforts to rehabilitate the grasslands of the central plateau area of BC. This has become the backbone of today’s successful ranching industry.
Bernie has enthusiastically raised funds for this award that is given to an undergraduate or graduate student, with demonstrated leadership qualities, who has a defined interest in ecology, sustainability of extensive animal production agriculture, and management of the natural grasslands.
In honour of Bernie’s efforts to recognize his father’s contribution to BC and Bernie’s dedication to giving back to the University, the Guichon family invites you to support Bernie’s cause on his 90th Birthday. Please make a donation to the Guichon Family Award at UBC.
