The nursing class of 1958 began their lifelong bond together while students at UBC, and have maintained this closeness throughout their careers and lives. This group of wonderful women is dynamic, passionate and inspirational. Several members of this BSN 1958 group became university nursing professors and witnessed the financial challenges of nursing students, similar to the challenges they had experienced themselves while students. The need for emergency financial help for students has extended through the generations.
Ten years ago, while celebrating their 50th class reunion, the group was motivated to honour their milestone anniversary by creating an endowment to support UBC’s School of Nursing, by providing emergency financial aid to current and future generations of nursing students.
Unlike your typical student award, this special fund supports undergraduate nursing students who encounter unforeseen financial circumstances. Since the BSN class of 1958 established this fund a decade ago, several nursing students in unexpected financial need have already been helped. Emergency support has assisted students with paying for their tuition, textbooks, groceries and even rent. Support from the fund has enabled these talented nursing students to continue their studies by alleviating some financial pressures. In several cases, the recipient’s education would have halted without the support.
As the group celebrates their remarkable 60th class reunion, their special bond remains as strong as ever. You can help mark the occasion with a donation to the emergency student award the class created.
