Ira Nadel wrote the first biography of Leonard Cohen, a process of unexpected discoveries, surprising revelations and unpredictable encounters that led him to the island of Hydra, a New York sound stage and an archive in a Santa Monica, CA garage. Educated at Rutgers and Cornell universities, Professor Nadel has specialized in biography, publishing lives of Tom Stoppard, David Mamet, Leon Uris and Virginia Woolf. His critical studies have focused on Ezra Pound, James Joyce, Gertrude Stein and, more recently, Philip Roth. A widely recognized academic and international lecturer, he is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, a UBC Distinguished University Scholar and winner of the 1996 Medal for Canadian Biography.
