Leave a message of encouragement below to UBC students for the upcoming school year! #UBCTogether

Dear UBC Student, Although your experience at UBC will be very different from mine, I hope you will learn a lot and carry forward value to the rest of your post-university life. I was a graduate student in a professional faculty and I lived on campus in residence and met my future husband. I now live in another province and rarely return to Vancouver. I’ve used what I learned throughout my years at UBC obtaining my university education throughout over 40 years in my profession and I owe it to UBC. Both my husband and I look back at UBC as important years in our lives and I hope that will be true for you as well. The current pandemic year will pass but you will always have the experience – innovative and challenging though it may be. In fact, every year for every student offers new personal challenges; out of challenges some valuable rewards. As my brother the farmer says, we all must bail hay while the sun shines.

Learning is a real gift of resilience. Being exposed to different ways of knowing, to a range of critical perspectives, diverse lived experiences. This is the richest gift, especially during turbulent and uncertain times like these ones. Getting a degree and deciding what to do with your life can feel overwhelming. Just remind yourself that you don’t need all the answers. You just need to be present, soak in the richness of learning and trust that it will reveal meaningful opportunities ahead when the time is right. The world is certainly changing and learning will change you to help you ride the waves of what is to come. Believe in the resilience of learning!

Dear UBC students, First of all, I’m jealous you’re still at UBC. My time there was one of the best times in my life. I hope you’re loving it! If not, hang in there – I believe you will. For me, the more I got involved, the more fun I had. I never lived in residence as I was a bit older when I started and I didn’t really connect with students in my major. But I did take a lot of fun electives and met great friends in theatre class. I also joined a sorority which was life changing and I cannot say enough about it. Maybe you’d enjoy it too. If not, find your people. For me, they made UBC the best. Also, make sure you storm the wall! All the best and congrats on how far you’ve already come.

Dear students, I could not imagine how difficult it must be for you to pull through this very odd time in our history. However, I believe that every one of you is a fighter and you will brave this storm. There are many learnings and opportunities from this unprecedented experience that you can take. Turn them into innovations with breakthrough thinking for the betterment of all. Keep in mind to always work hard and never give up. What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. Last but not least, I would like you to remember this gesture of goodwill during this difficult time and please pay it forward. Stay strong, safe, healthy and positive. I will be cheering on you

Hi Students! I hope you have been enjoying your summer! I just want to let you know that the UBC alumni have been in your shoes and understand the financial difficulties commonly faced by university students. I can only imagine how much harder it must be with the added burden of Covid-19 today. May this donation and many others help you achieve your dreams during this unfortunate time! Cheers, Derek Chan

Hi UBC students, I have financed my education with 100% loan and grant from the government. Incurring debt is not funny and I had repaid my loan with working a full time job plus a part time job after I graduated from UBC. I don't get any support from the government during this pandemic but you are and I hope with this little extra donation, you are reminded to spend your money wisely and this means to use them for your basic needs and not go to parties and have fun and get infected by the Coronavirus. If you must, please wear a mask to protect yourself and everyone else in the room because no one knows who has the virus. Please stay healthy and safe!

While the pandemic may have adverse effects on the world's normalcy, it's imperative that we be grateful for being alive and healthy. This pandemic provides you (the students ) with an opportunity to trail new routes ,make new discoveries and serve humanity at its lowest moments. Take heart, you are well capable of braving these times and coming out victorious. It'll only be a matter of time before the world celebrates you for your contribution during this time. History has taught us that great people are often made amid pandemics that hit their community; this is your time to arise and shine, a time for you to inspire your community by your commitment to your course, a time for you to leave a footprint on earth. This pandemic will end;bit the question you should ask yourself is what will you be when that time comes? May the good Lord be with you and encourage you even as you continue in your studies.
